Yoga is so much more than just stretching!
You DO NOT have to be flexible to do Yoga!
The benefits of Yoga are how well you can relax, focus and breathe into an Assana (posture), irrespective of how stiff or unsupple you are.
(Otherwise young, 12 year old, girl gymnasts would make the best Yogis.)
It's how you do the whole Assana, not how bendy you are in it.
(All you men out there who say you can't do Yoga - you can!!)
Who is it for?
This class is for those who are looking for:
- A more meditative state
- Relaxation of Body and Mind
- Calmer emotions
- Ways of de-stressing
- Healing - both in Body and Mind
- A less physically demanding class.
What is it?
This style of Hatha Yoga is based on traditional, classical principles.
It is part of a whole system whose aim is to lead you into becoming more aware of what is blocking your connection to peace, harmony, joy and well being.
You move into and out of an Asana in very specific ways.

The intention is to connect into your body, your breath and your mind so that they all work in harmony to achieve maximum release of physical, mental and emotional tension, so moving you into that place of peace and harmony.
What are the principles?
- When your body becomes quiet and still it stops resisting.
- It recognises that because you are not forcing the stretch there is no danger of tearing a muscle and so it relaxes more.
- The deep abdominal breathing presses onto your Vagus nerve which stimulates the release of positive endorphins, so your emotions calm and sooth.
- Relaxed muscles allow the blood and Life Force Energy to flow more freely to joints, muscles, tendons and internal organs.
- Dopamine and Serotonin - the feel good chemicals - are released into your system as your mind connects into feeing relaxed and peaceful.
- Waste products which collect in your lymphatic system are flushed away so your body feels clean and healthy and energised.
- The Asanas (poses) not only stretch your body but also allow an abundant flow of nutrients to your cells which then function optimally and so greatly increase your energy levels.
By helping you to understand the underlying principles of the practices you can build your own programme, suited to your needs. You are taught the essential points to remember and the things to do and also what not to do, when you are on your own.
Flexibility counts for little here! There will be many who will be far more bendy than me! So what? Are they ‘better” because of that?
As always - you are the important one, so variations of Asanas will be shown in class to meet your needs.
