This is a 12 day programme to introduce people to the practical side of Shiatsu. These days will generally be spread over 12 weekends though there are options available to the time scales.
However, it is still a total of 12 days, whether this is 6 weekends in Britain or 2 weeks on a beach in Goa!
The aim is to teach you to be competent to give a basic hands on experience to friends and family within very defined guidelines.
It is focused around the practical application of techniques with a minimum of theory.
This means that you will not have the capability to diagnose the imbalances in your ‘client’ although you will be well versed in the contra-indications and will know well what not to do and to whom not to do it.
How does it work?
- You learn to feel your own energy through Tai-chi and Qigong.
- Vipusana or Insight meditation teaches you to be here now and focus on what you sense and feel.
- You learn how to move around a body and how to touch and have physical contact.
- Techniques and some theory are taught.
- When you have completed the 12 days you will know the contra-indications - specific situations when not to give a treatment or use particular techniques.
Requisits to be a Practitioner
Ideally you will need to be able to kneel and to sit on your heels though in reality many people will find it initially uncomfortable.
I know that I did!
Within 30 seconds of the group kneeling in a circle at our first class there were a lot of us squirming and in pain!
The good news is that it doesn’t take long to become a lot more flexible and you are also taught lots of variations of postures and ways of treating which allow you to sit or stand.
The beauty of Shiatsu is that you don’t have to follow a set routine.
You can create your own treatment modality, taking into account how you feel on the day and what are the needs of your recipient.
