Shiatsu is a form of hands on, touch therapy, conducted whilst the receiver is fully clothed and, traditionally, lying on a futon.

It's aim is to:

  • Promote healing
  • Increase health
  • Is an aid in recovery from physical injuries, whether sport or work related.
  • It is very much connected to Accupuncture theory.

Although many people say 'Shiatsu Massage' it is not the same as classical massage which works with oils, mainly on muscles,

How does it work?

Before the hands on treatment begins there is a diagnosis, based on Accupuncture theory, and from that diagnosis a treatment modality is decided upon.
This is normally in the form of questioning and observation, obtaining a picture of the imbalances from the signs and symptoms presented.

  • It could be that the cause has a physical basis and so there will be a more physical treatment, involving gentle pulling, pushing, rotating and pressing of joints and muscles. There is no pain as receiving feedback is an essential aspect of the treatment practice.
  • It could be that the signs and symptoms have an emotional or energetic origin. In this case there is more of an emphasis on where the energy is blocked and the appropriate meridians and accu-points are activated, coupled with visualisation and breathing techniques.

An important part of recovery and healing is in the 'homework', which may involve sitting quietly with a specific visualisation or a move or series of moves from Qigong or Yoga or Tai-chi.

When your energy is flowing easily and in abundance then you will feel great, be healthy, sleep well, be emotionally more stable and more tolerant.

You may still get colds but they wont last as long and wont be as severe!

The main benefit is in the feeling of abundant energy and well being which will radiate out of you and through you.
