Liangong is a powerful series of 36 movements using alternating dynamic tension and relaxation within the moves. There are breath co-ordination, bending, twisting and moving elements to the form which make it increadibly invigorating.
It really should be a 'must have' in your arsenal of wellness skills.
It's ideal for anyone doing any physical activity, whether for work or play.
It is my favourite discipline to practice:
- when I get out of bed
- if I'm feeling tired and out of sorts.
- for recovering from training
- as a warm-up before an activity.
What is it?
Liangong is relatively new to the arsenal of techniques and practices coming out of China, being a synthesis of Old Practices and New, Bio-mechanical, understandings.
It has elements of Qigong, Chinese Yoga and Tai-chi within it.
- There are 36 movements in 6 groups of 6 movements.
- Each group has a particular focus, such as twisting or opening.
- Each move can be repeated as many times as your body needs.
- Each group affects specific parts of your body.
There is an alternation of a dynamic, stretching, tension, effort phase with a relaxing, soft, recovery phase. These are connected to the breath.
What are the benefits?
The alternating dynamic tension and relaxation of the muscles act like a pump, helping to squeeze waste out of the body and so cleansing the system.
The internal organs are massaged and fascia strengthened.
Oxygen and nutrients are taken to all the cells as the blood flow increases.
Holding tension through a range of movement strengthens muscles and ligaments whilst developing awareness of your body. Becoming aware of tension as it arises means that you can then learn to let it go, wherever you are.
Sitting in a cafe, standing in a queue, or waiting for the dentist!
This helps to eliminate physical, mental and emotional stress.
Who is it for?
Anyone!
- It is a wonderful warmup for physical activity.
- It's fantastic warm down after training, cleansing your system of lactic acid.
- A prelude to starting your day.
- Brilliant when you are tired and lethargic and need a pick-up.
- Provides much needed stretches, which so many people neglect to do, and yet which has been shown to be so beneficial.
- Those who are recovering from injury.
- Very beneficial for those with illnesses who are on their road to recovery.
